Aysgarth

Aysgarth is only a few miles away from Askrigg and is a village of two halves. The main village has two pubs, a tearoom, petrol station and village shop but it is probably better known for the impressive Aysgarth Falls down the hill past the church and which have carved their way through the landscape to produce a stepped series of 3 waterfalls. They have been a tourist attraction for over 200 years. Wordsworth visited them and Turner sketched them. More recently they provided a dramatic setting for a scene from the Hollywood movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
The rock garden at Aysgarth is one of the most unusual listed buildings in the Yorkshire Dales. Aysgarth Rockery is a picturesque alpine rockery that was built at the beginning of the 20th Century using blocks of limestone to create a rockscape and water feature. It was rescued and restored in 2002 and is worth a visit at any time of year-there is an honesty box for donations.
